Senior Service FAQ

What is supported retirement?

Once you feel that working or attending a work-focused program may not be what you want to continue to do, you may be ready to think about retiring.  It’s not unusual for this to happen as people reach their early to mid-fifties.  At NCSI, people who have decided to stop working and want to enjoy recreation and leisure activities receive supported retirement services at the Senior Service.  The NCSI staff are available to help in any way they can to enable you to participate in the activities you would enjoy.

What kind of support is offered at the NCSI Senior Service?

The Senior Service staff focus on providing support that will help to maintain your health and safety.  Examples of the ways they do this are – providing you with a wheelchair during a community trip if you are unable to walk the entire duration, making sure your lunch food is prepared appropriately and that any food guidelines you might have are followed, helping you in the restroom, keeping an eye open for changes in your health or stamina, etc.  In the midst of all the fun activities, the Senior Service staff always find a way to connect with those you live with to make sure that the care we provide at NCSI is coordinated with the care you receive at home.

How do I get to NCSI?

NCSI operates its own Transportation Service, which provides rides for nearly all of the individuals enrolled at the Senior Service.  This includes daily rides to and from your home, as well as rides to and from community recreation and leisure destinations.  The Transportation Service fleet currently includes several lift-equipped vehicles, which allow for easy, hassle-free access.

Do I need to bring a lunch?

Yes.  NCSI does not provide lunch, so you will need to bring a lunch with you.  There are refrigerators and microwave ovens available for your use.  NCSI staff are present during lunch time and are always available to help.

Why should I come to the NCSI Senior Service rather than retiring to my home?

For some seniors, retiring to their home is the very best option and meets their needs.  For many other seniors who are not ready to stay at home full-time, joining the NCSI Senior Service provides them with a chance to stay active doing the things they enjoy.  In some cases, you might become re-acquainted with old friends who may not have been a part of your life in recent years, but who are also now taking part in our Senior Service.  The activities at the Senior Service are meant to offer not only fun things for you to do, but to also keep you connected to the world beyond your home’s front door!

Would I come to the Senior Service every day?

Many seniors want to come every day of the week (except for Saturday and Sunday when we are not open).  Others choose to not come every day, and we will happily arrange a partial week schedule if you feel you would like to spend some of the week at home.  Keep in mind that the NCSI Senior Service is a partial day program, open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  You will not usually leave home before 9:00 a.m. and you will usually return by 3:00 p.m., so you will have lots of time to do things there too!
